Mobile shift continuing

The consumer shift towards mobile devices has grown exponentially in the last few years, and it doesn’t look like ceasing anytime soon. A research done by people at McKinsey & Company has shown that from 2008 to 2012, only a four-year space, PC usage has dropped by a whopping 21%, whilst mobile phone and tablet use have increased, by 11% each.

This information correlates with a recent blog post released by Google, which stated that more Google searches occur on mobile devices than on computers, in countries such as the US and Japan. This has lead to Google changing the advertising options they offer to businesses, for example, they have now offered advertising space on the Google Play Store, which is the Android version of the iTunes app store.google-logo

Mobile devices are compact and easy to carry around, which is a probable reason for the the shift, as consumers can search up things as soon as they think of them, whereas in the past they had to make a note of their thought and search it up later at home.

This shift has important implications for businesses, namely in the way they design their websites. There is a need now for websites to be mobile devices friendly, in that they look good, and are not simply the desktop version of the website fitted to a smaller device screen. Since mobile devices users can’t scroll and click on things with the same ease they do on a computer, mobile website designs need to adhere to certain specifications that allow for maximum usability on mobile devices.

Mobile devices are key to the of future digital marketing.

  1. It’s clear that websites need to have a mobile friendly format. I know that I mainly do my searching through my phone so it just seems logical that web-designers move with this trend

  2. I love that I’m able to Google something right there and then. It’s so convenient. But it also frustrates me when companies still don’t have mobile friendly websites in this day and age!
